Bauchi State Records Major Drop in Out-of-School Children

The Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has announced a remarkable achievement in reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state.

According to Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of Field Office for UNICEF Bauchi, the figure has dropped significantly from 1.7 million to about 500,000.

This milestone is credited to the collaborative efforts of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad, traditional rulers, religious leaders, communities, and parents.

The state government has prioritized education by investing heavily in infrastructure, including the renovation of dilapidated schools and the construction of new facilities. SUBEB has also launched a statewide enrollment campaign to mobilize parents and guardians to send their children to school.

Governor Muhammad reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Bauchi has access to quality education, noting that further strategies will be rolled out to reduce the numbers even more.

Dr. Rafique expressed optimism that with continued support from UNICEF and other partners, the state could record even greater success in the near future. She urged traditional leaders, parents, and community stakeholders to sustain their support for school enrollment and retention.

The Challenges Ahead
Despite the impressive progress, about 500,000 children are still out of school in Bauchi State. SUBEB has directed Local Government Chairmen to closely monitor schools and discipline absentee teachers as part of efforts to strengthen education quality and sustain gains already achieved.
