Dismiss Any Teacher, SBMC Official Sabotaging School Enrolment – Bauchi SUBEB Chairman

The Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Adamu Duguri, has directed that any teacher or School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) official found sabotaging children’s enrolment into school should be dismissed immediately.

Alhaji Duguri, who is also the District Head of Duguri, issued the directive during the launch of the 2025/2026 Statewide Enrolment Drive Campaign (EDC) held at Kirfi Local Government Area.

He further called for stiffer measures against any traditional ruler, titleholder, or community leader undermining the enrolment campaign, especially in areas recording low intake figures.

Highlighting the critical role of traditional institutions in enrolment, monitoring, and supervision, Duguri urged rulers to mobilize school-aged children massively to reduce the number of out-of-school children (OoSC) in the state. He recalled how he and Governor Bala Mohammed, alongside their mother, once trekked long distances to access education, warning that any parent or traditional leader showing laxity in enrolment efforts should risk losing their titles.

Earlier, the Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Bauchi, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, commended the state government’s efforts in reducing the number of OoSC from 1.2 million to 500,000. She, however, stressed that more work must be done to tackle the menace.

Representing the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, the District Head of Kirfi, Alhaji Lawal Muhammad, pledged door-to-door mobilisation of children back to school and urged parents to remove all barriers to learning.

The host, Chairman of Kirfi Local Government, Alhaji Abdulkadir Dewu, lamented the staggering figure of 200,000 OoSC in the area, with only 2 out of every 100 children attending school. He warned that the situation must be urgently addressed to safeguard the future of the next generation and ensure peace and security.

In their goodwill messages, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajiya Aisha Garba (represented by the Northeast Zonal Director, Alhaji Abdullahi Jarma), and the Chairman of the State Assembly Committee on Education, Dr. Nasir Ala, stressed that it is the duty of parents and communities to ensure every child is enrolled, retained, and able to complete schooling.

Declaring the campaign open, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Mohammed, explained that bringing the launch to Kirfi was not to brand the area as the most backward but to underscore the need for stakeholders to take responsibility in ending the OoSC.
