 :Reassure of meeting with arrangements

:Says significant investments have been made in critical sectors of economy

Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi state on Thursday evening reassured Global Affairs Canada and the UNICEF of the readiness of his administration to sustain its partnership with them especially in the area of prompt payment of counterpart funding.

The governor gave the assurance when a delegation from Global Affairs Canada and UNICEF led by Ms Djifa Ahado paid him an advocacy visit at Council Chambers, Government House, Bauchi, pledged full support in the implementation of programmes initiated by the two organisations for the best interest of the state.

Governor Bala Mohammed said Bauchi State, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and UNICEF have a strong partnership aimed at promoting economic growth, sustainable livelihood and nutrition for sustainable poverty reduction, especially among the children, women and youth across the state.

"I want to greatly appreciate Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and UNICEF for the support extended to our State over the years. I want to specially express my gratitude to Global Affairs Canada for the numerous interventions, which among others, include, Youth Entrepreneurship and Women's Empowerment in Northern Nigeria (Nigeria WAY), being implemented with MEDA in 7 LGAs of Bauchi, Dass, Toro, Ganjuwa, Warji, Katagum and Jama'are which is directly supporting a target population of over 16,000 mainly consisting of women and youth-led Small-Scale Businesses and Small Entrepreneurs.

"The overarching goal of the project is to enhance business performance in agricultural value chains, in order to improve the overall business environment and develop a culture of savings for women and youth and in the process, strengthen dialogue in communities and families about risks surrounding early and forced marriages."

He pointed out that, the
Livelihoods and Nutritional Empowerment (LINE) project targeting a population of 10,000 (60% women) of rural farmer households through increased farm productivity, enhanced market access, better nutrition for vulnerable
enabling households and
environment for agricultural business development had promoted the development of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA), Business Incubation Centres and Gender Action Learning Systems.

The governor said in Bauchi State Opportunities for Responsive Neonatal and Maternal Health (BORN), a gender transformative project had, through its support in the development of the healthcare system, contributed immensely to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality among the most vulnerable women and newborns in the state by improving the quality, availability, utilization and accountability of essential maternal and neonatal services.

"These component projects are- very commendable strategies in assisting the State to leverage additional technical and financial resources aimed at addressing the scourge of poverty and improving the confidence of the population in governance. It is worthy of mention
that the strategies put in place by the projects align with the present Administration's policies for employment generation, income creation and redistribution towards accelerated multiplier effect in the local economy. The Government is consciously responding to assimilate most of the best practices demonstrated by the Development Partners through a robust sustainability framework."

According to him, the roll out of the Micro-Finance Institution Development (MIFIN) project by the State Government for the eradication of poverty in the State anchored by the State's Agency for Sustainable Micro-Finance will primarily mainstream the lessons learned from the implementation of the Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) and consolidate the benefits by scaling up the level and scope of execution.

Governor Bala Mohammed explained that, the project seek to develop and strengthen micro-finance institutions operating in the State in order to enhance financial access by the economically active poor and thus enhance productivity in Agricultural and Micro & Small Business Enterprises.

"The State is working with the local implementing partners whose capacity has been strengthened through the efforts of international development partners to ensure the replication of the skills sets and transfer of the human capacity development for enhanced economic integration. I must also emphasize, and more fundamentally too, that sustainability planning in the State is embedded through the effective linkage of the State Strategic Development Plan and the annual fiscal estimate aimed at ensuring a healthy implementation of the annual budget for sustained economic growth."

The governor also said his administration has made a significant investments in the last three years in the areas of infrastructural development, healthcare delivery, education, and water and sanitation among others, assured that it will not relent in supporting  programmes that increase employment, provide livelihood grants and social transfers to the vulnerable groups.

In her key note address, the Consellor and Head Development Cooperation, Canadian Government, Ms Djifa Ahado said for over 15 years, Global Affairs Canada has implemented a number of programmes in Bauchi State which contributed in making the state to be priority state of the organisation.

"Our coming here to you is to brief you on what we have done so far for the state and what we are planning and to seek for continued partnership and number for the execution of programmes for the benefit of the people of the state particularly children and women."
